Srinagar to Leh by Road: A 2-Day Himalayan Drive

The 434-km stretch from Srinagar to Leh is often called one of the most scenic — and most punishing — highways in the world. It climbs from the green Kashmir Valley, over the Zoji La pass, through the stark Suru Valley, and into the high-altitude desert of Ladakh.

When to Go

The highway is only open from late May/early June to late October, once the Border Roads Organisation clears the winter snow from Zoji La. July and August are peak season; September offers clearer skies and thinner crowds.

Day 1: Srinagar to Kargil (~205 km, 7–8 hrs)

  • Leave Srinagar early to cross Sonamarg before the day traffic builds up.
  • Zoji La (11,575 ft) is the trip's first real test — a narrow, unpaved stretch cut into the mountainside. Go slow, and don't attempt it after heavy rain or snowmelt.
  • Past the pass, the landscape changes abruptly into the Drass Valley, one of the coldest inhabited places on earth.
  • Overnight in Kargil, a good halfway point with basic but reliable hotels.

Day 2: Kargil to Leh (~230 km, 7–8 hrs)

  • Detour to Mulbekh, home to a 9th-century rock-cut Buddha statue.
  • Cross Namika La and Fotu La, the two passes that mark the real entry into Ladakh's high desert.
  • Stop at the Lamayuru monastery, set in a lunar-like landscape often called "Moonland."
  • Continue along the Indus River into Leh.

Practical Tips

  • Acclimatize in Kargil before pushing on — altitude sickness is common on the Leh side.
  • Fuel up in Srinagar or Kargil; stations are sparse beyond that.
  • Mobile network is patchy past Sonamarg — download offline maps in advance.
  • BRO checkpoints may ask for ID; carry physical copies, not just digital.

Should You Drive Yourself or Hire a Car?

Self-driving is possible but demanding — hairpin bends, altitude, and unpredictable weather favor an experienced local driver, especially for a first trip. A hired vehicle with a Kashmir-based operator also simplifies permits and breakdown support in remote stretches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions Answered

Is the Srinagar to Leh highway safe to drive yourself?
It's manageable for experienced drivers in good weather, but the Zoji La stretch is narrow, unpaved, and exposed — many first-time travelers prefer hiring a local driver familiar with the route and altitude conditions.
How many days should I budget for the Srinagar-Leh road trip?
Most travelers take 2 days one-way with an overnight in Kargil, but adding a third day for stops at Lamayuru and Mulbekh makes for a much less rushed drive.
