Our Journey

Born From a Love of These Mountains

Northern Shoveller was founded in 2015 by a group of Kashmir-born travel enthusiasts who felt the world deserved to experience the true magic of Jammu & Kashmir — beyond the headlines and stereotypes.

What started as a small houseboat operation on Dal Lake has grown into a full-service travel company offering over 50 curated packages across Kashmir and Ladakh, serving thousands of happy travelers every year.

We are proud members of the Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Board and hold all required certifications and licenses. Every guide on our team is a certified local professional with deep knowledge of the terrain, culture, and history.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know before you go.

Is Kashmir safe for tourists?
Yes, Kashmir is very safe for tourists. Tourism is a primary industry, and locals are incredibly welcoming. Our "Safety First" protocol ensures we monitor conditions and have contingency plans for every trip.
When is the best time to visit Kashmir and Ladakh?
For snow and winter sports in Kashmir, visit between December and early March. For blooming gardens and pleasant weather, April to October is best. Ladakh is accessible and best visited from June to September.
Do I need permits for Ladakh?
Yes, Inner Line Permits (ILP) are required for certain restricted areas in Ladakh (like Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley). We handle all permit arrangements for our clients.
What about altitude sickness in Ladakh?
Altitude sickness is a real concern. We always schedule acclimatization days in Leh before heading to higher altitudes. Plus, our Safety & First Response Officer ensures expert medical guidance is on call.
What kind of clothing should I pack?
Packing depends on the season. For summer, bring light layers with a warm jacket for the evenings. For winter, pack heavy woolens, thermal wear, waterproof jackets, and sturdy snow boots. We provide a detailed packing checklist upon booking.
Are vegetarian or vegan meal options available?
Absolutely. While Kashmiri cuisine is famous for meat dishes, there are plenty of delicious vegetarian options. Let us know your dietary preferences in advance, and we will ensure your meals are customized accordingly.
How do we travel between different locations?
All transportation is handled by our dedicated team. We use comfortable, well-maintained SUVs and Tempo Travelers driven by local experts who know the mountainous terrain perfectly.
Can I customize my itinerary?
Yes! While we offer over 50 curated packages, every trip can be tailored to your interests, budget, and travel pace. Just let us know what you are looking for, and we will craft the perfect itinerary.
